I decided to travel around Laos with Stray Asia, as I had good experiences with them before. From Chang Mai we traveled to Laos and then took a slow boat for two days to Luang Prabang. I liked the fact that they chose a home stay in a local village oppose to staying in a guest house which you do if you travel with the regular slow boats. It was really interesting to see how the locals live and they even did a traditional ceremony for us which was an unforgettable experience. This pass offers you the option to hop-off and I would recommend you to stop in Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and perhaps Don Det a little bit longer than suggested, as there is a lot to see and do and those are really the highlights of this trip. Otherwise you spend a lot of time in the bus. I unfortunately didn't have the time to do that, but still managed to see the highlights in the given time frame. For the time we were in Laos we had our own bus, which was super convenient and comfortable. One of the biggest hassles traveling in South East Asia is organizing your transport and then spending long hours in a full and uncomfortable bus- Stray was a great alternative for that and worth spending a little bit more money on. We did a lot of stops on the journey and visited temples, waterfalls and many more things that you would usually skip. We had a local tour guide coming with our group and since he was from Laos he could give us a lot of information about his country and help to translate in remote areas. He suggested activities, accommodation and restaurants where we could eat together, but was also very helpful when you wanted to find an alternative. The accommodation that Stray chooses are guest houses with twin or triple rooms that usually have their own bathroom. They were basic, but clean and there was nothing to complain about. As I was traveling alone I stead one night in a different place in a dorm room, for the other nights I shared the room in the Stray accommodation with people I met on the tour and shared the costs. My highlights of this tour were Luang Prabang, tubing in Vang Vieng, seeing the stunning waterfalls in Pakse, cycling around the 4000 islands and seeing the caves in Khong Lor. If you want to see places that are off the beaten track, traveling in South East Asia for the first time or don't have that much time and don't want to spend your time figuring out how to get to place- then Stray is definitely for you.

The trip was amazing, so many beautiful places and people along the way. Stray always found the places that we never would have been able to find on our own. Endless waterfalls, boatrides and meetings with the locals created a great trip!

My guide was amazing. He loved everything about Asia and showed us the best places to eat and drink along the way. I loved the homestay on the Mekong River too, a memory I will keep forever.

Stay offers a great opportunity with the 'Hop on Hop off' method which I have not seen by other companies, this really gives you flexibility to stay in places that inspire you. With many local guides along the way you have an opportunity to learn as much as you wish about the local community and environment. The general standard of accommodation is pretty good but also if you choose to pay or accommodation along the way you can always stay in other residences for a cheaper or more luxurious feel. Jon

I loved being on this trip with an amazing group of people. Our stray tour leader was enthusiastic every day and showed us sites and places I would have never visited on my own. The hop off system is a great way to explore the country in your own pace. I look forward doing one of the other trips stray offers. Thanks for making this holiday one of my best memories in life.

This is a really nice and easy way to travel. Most things are arranged, but you can still completely make your own journey. Martijn and Onh were a great team that tried to make the best for their passengers. With Stray you'll do and see stuff, you would never had seen or done on your own.

I did the Full Moon tour through a bit of Thailand and all of Laos and I would recommend using Stray for anyone that wants to see the WHOLE country of Laos; its still the best way to get around. However, I dont think anyone really needs to see the whole country, if I did it again I would have probably gone on my own and just seen a few cities and visited neighboring countries with my time in Southeast Asia. Most of the country looks the same, same meals, pretty consistent. Stray is nothing like New Zealand (the buses, the accommodations, the activities) so be aware everything is going to be in SE Asia standards. But it is really cheap and that seems most important to backpackers. Ryan was my guide and was a wealth of information. He didnt help me book my tours outside what came with the trip, he waited too long to book the elephants so we MISSED THE ELEPHANT EXPERIENCE IN ASIA- that wasnt cool. He wouldnt help book transfers or travel outside our route (which was hard because the lack of wifi in Laos). But I really liked him as a person and we had a good time and he could answer (in Thai) all our cultural and practical questions for getting around. I had NO idea I would be spending 5-8 hours a day on bus transport. It was a lot more driving than NZ. I dont think I would have signed up for that if I had seen an itinerary time schedule. And there are few places to stop for food along the way, there just isnt the infer-structure in Laos. I appreciated the homestay experiences, but I would not do Stray again in SE Asia, a little too thorough for me.
