Compare G Adventures vs. Geckos Adventures

Both G Adventures and Geckos are among the industry leaders of group tours worldwide.  While G Adventures focus’ on all ages (including specific family tours), Geckos is the youth-oriented brand catering to “18 to 30 something” travellers. The Yolo tours which G Adventures offers would be the closest direct comparison between the two brands.

Group size, age requirements and travel styles

G Adventures has divided their trips into different travel styles; Classic Tours, National Geographic (for more hands on experiences), Active tours, Yolo (specifically for 18 to 19 year old), Family (specifically for families travelling with kids), Rail (primary transport by train), Marine (primary transport by boat) and Local Living (local cultural focus). G Adventures has small group tours, so you can expect a maximum group size of 15, but often the average is just 10. While they accommodate specifically for adventure travellers with their Yolo tours, and children with their Family tours, there is no upper age limit, although travellers with pre-existing medical conditions are required to complete a medical questionnaire.

Geckosalso only offer small group tours, with their group size being capped at 16 people, and averaging 9. Geckos offer tours to travellers aged “18 to 30 something”, so you always be travelling with similar aged, like minded travellers. Because of these smaller groups, they often stay in smaller accommodations, and try to offer “local” experiences with a focus being on local guides, central accommodations, public transport and building strong friendships among the small group.

Overall, both Intrepid and Geckos are targeted at people wanting to take part in adventure travel - experiencing the world with other adventurers in a small group, and while G Adventures offers tours targeted at the younger demographic, Geckos only offer this.

Physical Requirements

With both G Adventures and Geckos, generally there is no strenuous activities that must be completed, although some optional excursions, if you decide to do them, may involve swimming, bike riding or hikes. This should be checked on a per itinerary basis, as there may be times throughout specialty tours (hiking for example) where a certain level of fitness will be required. This will be outlined in the itinerary of each tour.

As both operators are targeted at adventure travellers, you will be required to carry your own luggage to and from accommodation, sometimes up stairs etc. Often with both Geckos and G Adventures the transport will include (or be primarily) public transport, so it is important to remember that the luggage you take with you will need to be carried to and from public transport terminals etc. You should be in good health and fit enough to carry your own luggage walking to and from transport, accommodation etc.

Accommodation

With the small group size of Geckos, they try to use small, local accommodations close to the city centre. This can include guest houses, hotels, hostels, overnight trains, or even a treehouse. As accommodation can vary greatly depending on the region and destinations visited, it is best to check out the accommodation section of the full itinerary to see where you will be staying.

G Adventures also will not charge a mandatory single supplement for any of their tours. The standard and style of accommodation varies depending on the tour. G Adventures often uses local hotels, hostels, campsites or somewhere else entirely. G Adventures try to use local, authentic accommodation where possible, and try to keep the use of large chains or commercial accommodations to a minimum.

Accommodation for both G Adventures and Geckos is based on twin-shared accommodations where a single supplement is not mandatory but can be requested.

Transportation

G Adventures tours will in most cases use public transportation, and use local guides. This is done so that travellers can experience the local transportation system and cultures, and public transportation allows face-to-face interaction with local people. Some G Adventures tours, including “Superior”, "Comfort Class" and most adventures in Africa, will use private transportation. It is best to check the details of the tour to see which transportation style will be used, as it can vary from tour to tour, and different destinations. The guides used are usually locals from the area or region that you are travelling.

With the intimate group sizes of a Geckos tour, it doesn’t make sense for them to have large coaches, and so local public transport is used. This can be anything from a train across Europe, to boats around South East Asia or a camel in Northern Africa. Each Geckos tour has a detailed itinerary outlining what the accommodation and transport will be for each day of tour.
