Compare Contiki vs. Geckos Adventures

Both Contiki and Geckos offer tours for 18 - 30ish year olds, offering travellers the chance to create epic stories while travelling. We look at the difference between the two operators on the key factors when deciding on which tour to go on.

Pricing

Contiki and Geckos offer a similar pricing structure and have similar prices per day, although if you are looking at a particular tour it is best to compare the individual tours. In general, Contiki has a higher price per day over all, with Geckos offering a lower price per day - although in some regions this may vary, so it is best to compare the specific tours you are interested in.

Group size, age requirements and travel styles

Contiki has been running tours for over 30 years for the 18 to 35 year old market, expanding the tours they offer worldwide. Group sizes are typically from 30 to 50 travellers, sometimes smaller and sometimes larger groups, with a focus on the shared travel experiences you will share with your group. As a solo traveller, there will always be many people to chat with and do things with on a Contiki tour. Depending on the tour you choose, the travel style can be fast paced and action packed, or a more relaxing atmosphere just focusing on one destination or region. Contiki has shorter tours, as well as much longer journeys where you will see many destinations across many countries.

Geckos only offer small group tours, with their group size being capped at 16 people, and averaging 9. Geckos offer tours to travellers aged “18 to 30 something”, so you always be travelling with similar aged, like minded travellers. Because of these smaller groups, they often stay in much smaller accommodations, and try to offer “local” experiences with a focus being on local guides, central accommodations, public transport and building strong friendships among the small group.

Physical Requirements

With both operators, generally there is no strenuous activities that must be completed, although some optional excursions, if you decide to do them, may involve swimming, bike riding or small hikes. This should be checked on a per itinerary basis, as there may be times throughout specialty tours (hiking for example) where a certain level of fitness will be required. This will be outlined in the itinerary of each tour.

As both oeprators are targeted at youth travellers, you will be required to carry your own luggage to and from accommodation, sometimes up stairs etc. With Geckos, as the primary mode of transport will be public transport, it is important to remember that the luggage you take with you will need to be carried to and from public transport terminals etc.

Accommodation

Contiki offer a range of accommodation, ranging from camping, hostels and hotels, through to yachts and resorts - depending on the individual tour. The tours can generally be grouped into their accommodation style; camping, hostel, and hotel, as well as other specialty accommodations such as resorts and yachts.

Contiki offer an added bonus in Europe of having their own, Contiki owned and run, local accommodations. In France in the Beaujolais wine region, near Lyon, Contiki owns an old French Chateau, Chateau de Cruix, which is now used for the accommodation of many Contiki tours. As well as France, in Tyrol in the Austrian Alps, there is also Gasthof Schöneck, a traditional Austrian gasthof (guest inn), owned and run by Contiki where travellers can stay when travelling through the region.

With the small group size of Geckos, they try to use small, local accommodations close to the city centre. This can include guest houses, hotels, hostels, overnight trains, or even a treehouse. As accommodation can vary greatly depending on the region and destinations visited, it is best to check out the accommodation section of the full itinerary to see where you will be staying.

Transportation

Depending on where you are visiting, generally Contiki will have their own transportation - often a large, fully air-conditioned coach with a toilet and sometimes even wifi. Particularly in Europe, these are recent model coaches that are clean and pleasant to travel in. By using this mode of transport, the coach can normally drop you off directly in front of your accommodation, greatly minimising the distance you will need to take your luggage yourself.

With the intimate group sizes of a Geckos tour, it doesn’t make sense for them to have large coaches, and so local public transport is used. This can be anything from a train across Europe, to boats and tuk-tuks around South East Asia or a camel in Northern Africa. Each Geckos tour has a detailed itinerary outlining what the accommodation and transport will be for each day of tour.
