Located on the western border of Nigeria, Benin is the birthplace of voodoo which was spread around the globe by the massive export of slaves many years ago. Walk along the slave route to the beach in Ouidah, tour the Grande Marche du Dantopka (a skull and skin-filled fetish market) in Cotonou, and visit the interesting teak stilt villages on the lake in Ganvie. The architecture in the cities has Portuguese beginnings and French colonial flavours.
