Absolute Africa The Gorilla Trek, 20th October 2011

Reviewed 22nd November 2011
We booked the Gorilla Trek with Absolute Africa after reading the reviews ourselves and not being able to find any negative reviews about this company and the products it offers. Though we were a bit skeptical about what we would get for the price we paid we were incredibly surprised and the great value for the money offered by this tour operator. A couple of us have traveled with another African operator in the past, for a lot more money, and have found that they do not even begin to compare with the standard of treks offered by Absolute Africa. Our guide was amazing, always smiling, incredibly well organized and efficient. Our driver was courteous and very safe. Not once during the entire 3 week trek did we ever feel like our lives were in danger. The trek was brilliantly organized and the food, prepared by our own trek members, phenomenal. We even had t-bone steaks for dinner one night, a complete surprise!!! My parent's, who are in their sixties, also enjoyed themselves immensely and were treated as equals among all the members of our group, most of whom where half their age. Though completely new, we found the tents a bit small for 2 people and had wished they were a bit larger. Being 192 cm tall I found it difficult to stretch while lying inside without one of my extremities touching the tent walls, which at night would often become wet. Aside from an "all-or-nothing" ventilation concept in the truck, that's the only other thing we would like to see change. The rest was all fantastic!! Overall, a phenomenal experience which we will continue in a couple of years along the remainder of the route. Would recommend to anyone willing to live an adventurous life!!!

Absolute Africa The Gorilla Trek, 14th November 2010

Guide did a perfect job, sorted everything for the group. Everyday introductions what to expect of the next day, how to be behave in certain situations. Driver was great as well, drove safely and was always there to lend a hand. Been lucky, since the group was very homogene and got along very well. Loved the international experience. Countries visited were great, especially Rwanda and Uganda, what a lushy joy they are. Campsides stayed were nice, expected less hot showers or let's say I didn't expect too much showers anyways. But facilities were good. Would do it again. Actually I am thinking of doing the Namibia Nomad sometime soon. Been a pleasure to travel with Absolute.

Absolute Africa Classic Safari - the component, 4th June 2010

Reviewed 9th August 2010
Great guides and drivers on the trip. Very few problems with anything (only one minor delay at one of eight border crossings!). The meals were great and the guides did a wonderful job with helping sort everything out. I ended up having a tent all to myself for the entire trip since it wasn't full, so that was a great little bonus. The mats were also very comfortable so I slept much better through the two months than I initially expected. Even with lions roaring half a km away! :D For the money, I don't think this trip can be beat. Game parks and activities are very expensive anyway and when you factor in the included transport, camping, and food, this trip can be just as cheap (if not cheaper) as doing it all on your own, with almost none of the hassle or sketchy situations that you would no doubt find yourself in by going solo. Definitely recommend going with Absolute Africa, but keep in mind this is a GROUP Overland trip. TIA is the driving philosophy behind traveling through Africa. Unrealistic expectations of having everything catered to your specifications will not work. Come prepared for that and this will be an experience of a lifetime. There are also some long days on the truck (Africa is enormous!) but Absolute provides its own mini library on each truck as well as a sound system that you can plug ipods into so the hours do pass easily enough. Plus you can look out your window at any given time and take in some amazing views. Amazing trip.

I have just completed this tour and had the time of my life - can't recommend the company more highly! Highlights were the gorillas, Zanzibar, the delta and so many more .... too many to list. Trip was well run from start to finish and the support from the office when I was preparing to leave to UK invaluable. Seriously good value for money.

Absolute Africa Maasai & Migration, 12th January 2008

Reviewed 6th February 2009
On my way home from working in Canada for a year, I wanted to do something different. I chose the Maasai Migration tour in Tanzania and it was the best choice possible. Absolute Africa had great gear, buses, staff and they were well organised in everything they did. Starting in Arusha, the tour was full of highlights including the Ngoro Ngoro Crater and Serenghetti National Park. The trip is moderately taxing with nights spent camping in the wild, with numerous animals sniffing at your tent in the wee hours of the morning! Zanzibar is a great place to stop with awesome markets and great beaches to relax. Stone Town can be a little bit dicey, with narrow streets that form a maze without any landmarks to assist you with finding your way. Along the way there are opportunities to do extra tours including climbing Mount Kilaminjaro, swimming with Dolphins and visiting Prison Island. The staff from Absolute Africa were very helpful with organising the day to day activities and dealing with the niggles that can happen in Africa.

Absolute Africa Wildlife & Spice Island, 20th December 2007

The highlights of this trip were the Gorilla trek, white water rafting the nile and the safaris in Tanzania - serengeti, Ngorongoro crator and tarangeri. Unfortunately Kenya broke out into chaos while we were in Uganda on our way back to Kenya so we had to substitute activities that we missed in kenya so I think we missed some more cool stuff. but we did go to murchison falls in uganda and although its not as good as some of the tanzania parks it is getting better and a good chance to see hippos and crocs. Before kenya broke out I would have suggested starting in Entebee as the first week in kenya didn't have much happening while we waited to pick up more people in Uganda - but now they probably start the tour there anyway. Packing tips: deet 50% - 100% is potent and melts plastic! Pack light coloured clothes and long sleeve / legs for dusk till dawn - also helps when doing the safaris as tsetse flies are attracted to dark blue and black colours and their bites hurt! dust protection for your cameras - many cameras fill with dust and breakdown from the dust so try to reduce it It was a good group of people on the tour (except the tour leader) we had 20-30s and some older couples was a good mix. Mostly aussies and kiwis at this time of year - travelling back from london before xmas. Its a good company as far as cost but it involves everyone pitching in to cook dinner and breakfast (in groups). Make sure you calculate additional costs correctly and carry cash. Lots of people relied on cards even though advised not to and got stuck along the way as no atms! Keep cash on you until you meet the truck - they have safety boxes. Good bunch of people and fun trip - we were unlucky at some circumstances but defo worth meeting lots of new people and having a blast in east africa!
