Days 3-7 Lhasa

Travel to Tibet by airplane and visit the awe-inspiring Potala Palace in Lhasa. Join Tibetan pilgrims as they prostrate themselves along the holy Barkhor circuit and shop for prayer wheels and carpets at the market outside the Jokhang Temple.

Day 8 Gyantse

Day 9 Shigatse

Home to the best-preserved monastery in Tibet, Shigatse is the seat of the Panchen Lama, who ranks second to the Dalai Lama. Check out the town's ancient bazaar, buzzing with local life.

Get a feel for Tibetan life in the tiny settlement of Tingri. Look beyond the colourful prayer flags and vast landscapes to see a towering Mt Everest.

Day 13 Bhote Kosi River

Leaving the Tibetan plateau, head for the cliff-hugging town of Zhangmu. Travel across the border into Nepal and follow the Arniko Highway as it snakes its way above the raging Sun Kosi River.
