Trip Description:
Beginners course in ice climbing. The goal of the course is to teach appropriate techniques, proper use of knots and different ice anchors for climbing and rappelling.
Objectives:
The goal of the course is to teach appropriate techniques in movement on ice, the proper use of knots and methods of putting up anchors, ice protection and rappelling stations. The main objective is to teach proper movement and do as much actual climbing as possible.
Schedule: Evening session on the 26th Oktober at 20:00 and full day session on the 29th. Oktober
Note: Prior experience: No special requirements are needed for this course but it helps to have done a course in winter mountaineering or rock climbing beforehand.
Group size: 6 participants per guide.
Detailed Itinerary:
Evening session:
•Commonly used knots (f.ex. figure of eight, bowline, girth hitch and prussic knots).
•The process of climbing
•Equipment for ice climbing.
•Travel plans for the following ice climbing day.
Full day session:
The course evolves mainly around climb as much as possible in top-rope with the guidance of a climbing instructor.
•Main anchors
•Climbing process
•Correct handling of ice tools (etc. axe and crampons in different situations).
•Rappelling with safety.
•Climbing techniques.
Appropriate clothing, climbing harness, locking carabineer, two ice climbing tools, helmet and ice climbing crampons. You can rent the equipment from Icelandic Mountain Guides! The instructor reserves the right to reject the use of inappropriate equipment that students bring. We do recommend that participants wear stiff climbing boots, to enjoy the course fully.
